USP
The magazine i am going to create is going to be under the genre of rock. It is going to be based on magazines such as 'KERRANG' and 'ROCK SOUND', these magazines are typical rock magazines. However i have looked at these magazines and realised that they are appealing to the male audience. What i am going to attempt to do is create a magazine that appeals to the female audience. There are many teen girls who love to read magaines that are the genre rock and i think it would be a great achievement to create this.
conventions of music magazines
All magazines follow the same rules and music magazines are no exception.
front cover
front cover
- The header/logo/image/colour scheme must all fit the the genre of the magazine, and appeal to the target audience.
- The front cover of a magazine usually contains a picture of well known stars, the dominant image
- The most common MOD is direct address, as it seems to invite the reader in
- The cover is the main advertisement of the entire magazine, as it is representing the magazine as a whole. so it must be bright/interesting/eye catching
- A variety of fonts should be used to be eye catching
- This page should also be bright & colourful
- Images dominate the text, so images with page numbers are usually included
- Title of magazine will also appear on every page including the conetnts page
- A list of the contents of the magazine
- Headlines and subheading to explain the story and to catch the audiences interest
- The star must have something to say, to be featured in the magazine
- Again one image must dominate the article, there maybe smaller images included
- Text grabs are important (makes the audience want to read the article (usually contraversial, funny or rude)
- Writing must be clear, easy to follow. In music magazines the writing tends to be informal (slang may even occur

Feedback 27.1.11
Rebecca, well done on completing the prelim. Don't forget to scan and upload your sketch for the contents page also. Mike or Nikki will scan it for you if you ask them. You need to complete the post on the conventions of magazines asap - should've been done last weekend as homework. Also, the next thing to work on is an analysis of a real front pg, contents and feature article. See me if you need any help.

preliminary Task
evaluation
By doing this preliminary task, i have learnt how to use indesign and photoshop. I now feel more confident in using this software now. The thing i like the most is the font i have used for the header because it catches the readers attention straight away. To improve it, i think i should of used a variety of different fonts because i have only used two and i think it would make a big difference. Also i think the cover would look a lot better if i had put the captions around the side instead of straight across the bottom, with brighter colours.
The target audience is for college students, this is made clear by the font used for the heading and also the low price of this magazine £1.50. Personally i think that this magazine will appeal better to the male audience because of the colour scheme used and the font because it seems to look a bit like graffiti.
The conventions of this magazine.
The mode of address is direct and this is what we want because it is looking straight out of the magazine and inviting the reader in. I have used different bold fonts. I have followed most of the conventions, apart from the star being the main advertisement, but i think that this may help sell the product because he is one of them, a typical student who attends their college.

initial idea's for magazine
I want to do a music magazine that fits into the genre of rock. It is going to be called "MAYHEM", the featured band is going to be called "Fallen Angels". The band is going to be made up of three girls. For the front cover the lead singer is going to be stood in the centre with the other two at either side all looking straight ahead as if they are looking straight out of the magazine (direct adress). I want the band image to be inspired by other bands such as, "Black Veil Brides" and contain the rock chick vibe. I think the magazine is going to be a weekly magazine, this means its going to be affordable, and the magazine will have a reasonable amount of pages, but not as many as would be expected in a monthly magazine. The feature story is going to be about their new album... and it will also be about; how the band came up with the name for the album? were they recorded it? how long did it take to complete? who wrote the songs for the album? did anything dramatic happen whilst it was getting recorded, and did this affect the album in anyway? etc.
Colour scheme: black, red and white
Stars: Fallen Angels (a well known band)
Magazine cover: bright, interesting, eye catching and needs to attract the target audience (rock lovers)
*subheadings- main stories that want to be advertised/ other stories that will appear.
Contents page: bright/ colourful. should have a dominant image (of featured band... still use direct address) a list of what is going to appear in this magazine
Feature article: about new album/ must be easy to follow/ text grabs (quotes to attract audience)
